Security is an issue that many website owners overlook completely and yet it is absolutely critical to the success and survival of your site and online business. You may think that hackers are only interested in the big boys but smaller websites are compromised all the time – usually as a relay for spam messages or data theft. Here at Design Fox we want you and your website to stay safe, so here are a few handy website security tips to keep in mind.
Good Password Habits
Get into good habits with your passwords and you will save yourself a lot of headaches in the long run. Your website, database, social media accounts and many other important accounts will have passwords so here are 5 good habits to get into:
Keep your software updated
Ok, so we all know we should be doing this, but how many times have you postponed software updates because they are inconvenient and you don’t want to stop what you are doing? Ensuring that your software is updated and your virus scanner is working is vital for your site security. Between updates there can be security holes in your software which can quickly be found and abused by hackers. So, whether it’s your Microsoft, anti-virus, WordPress or CMS, run those updates on time!
Make sure that you regularly backup your workto protect you in the event of a virus or security breach. There are plenty of ways to backup your files both online, using the cloud, and offline, using an external hard drive. If you are using an external hard drive to backup your files then store it away from the office because fire and theft can quickly leave you empty handed.
Know Your Plan B
Do you have a Plan B or a backup plan for what you would do if your website or files were hacked or compromised? Speak to Design Fox about a Plan B to make sure that you know who to call and what to do in an emergency. If you are working with another agency then be sure that they will know what to do to recover your systems should the worst happen.
